Day One
My first flight was enjoyable despite the length and lack of space in the seats. I even had a chance to test my German when a woman sitting next to me asked if I could switch seats with her husband so that they could sit together. I didn’t expect to have such an early exposure to speaking German in a casual non-classroom setting, but I felt pretty good after the interaction knowing that I could easily understand a native German speaker (even if it was only a simple sentence).
I bought a day pass for the tram and took the S24 from Zürich Airport to Zürich Hauptbahnhof. From there I walked 15 minutes to the coffee shop in which I am currently writing this blog post. I think the most surprising thing (and my favorite thing about Switzerland despite only having been here for an hour) for me to observe has been the cleanliness of the city. I would consider the Zürich tram a sort of anti-Metro North railroad system in the sense that Metro-North is consistently late, often loud, and dirty. The tram was probably 70% full and still it was silent. I also thought it was cool that the tram had two levels. I rode on the top level and stared out of the window for the entire time. So far I would give Zürich a 10/10 based on the transportation system and the numerous opportunities I’ve had to practice my German (and my own personal bias, I’ve wanted to come to Switzerland for a while). I’ll close this first post out with some German.

Bremen, Biking, and Beer
Today was my second full day in Bremen. I went on a bike ride with my host mother around the neighborhood (Oberneuland) and the surrounding area. I learned about the nature preserve bordering their neighborhood and I even saw a grey heron in the swamp area.
We walked to a nearby Gasthaus where I had my first schnitzel. I also ordered Bratkartoffeln or fried potatoes which were like home fries but better. I also tried some german beer today. Funnily enough, this was the only restaurant where we waited to be seated. The other restaurants that I had been to followed the custom that visitors would seat themselves at any empty table and wait to be helped. My host mother also explained to me that waiters and waitresses in Germany are paid a living wage so Germans tend to tip much less than Americans.

School!
Today was my second day at the Ökumenisches Gymnasium zu Bremen. So far I’ve had a chance to sit in on English courses in the 6th, 10th, 11th, and 12th grades. The sixth graders were a lot more eager to ask me questions about being from the U.S. and were very excited to learn that I was going to study abroad in Germany and gave me lots of suggestions about which places I should visit. I also found that I could contribute much more in the 6th grade class because they were focusing on language and grammar, whereas the older students were focusing on literature (e.g. The Giver, To Kill a Mockingbird, Romeo and Juliet, etc.).
I learned both from my host mother and the teachers at the school that German students start learning second and third languages very early which was very interesting to me. As a result the English spoken by the students in higher grades is very good. I think the level of English spoken by seniors is similar to the level of french I spoke in my senior year of high school, but even so I was only studying one language so I found it pretty impressive that most if not all students are also studying a second foreign language.
I’ve also found that my listening comprehension skills are far better than my spoken skills. The speed at which native German speakers talk makes it a little difficult to hear every word, but my host family speaks to each other and to me in German about ninety percent of the time so I’ve gotten better at recognizing words. I think that when I speak, I worry too much about the grammatical formation of the sentence and as a result I overthink the sentence that I am trying to say.

Hamburg!! (and the Bremer Ratskeller…..and the Auswandererhaus Bremerhaven)
On Saturday I had a chance to go beneath the Bremen Rathaus for a tour of the wine cellar. As part of the guided tour, we were given a glass of German “Sekt” (which is a type of sparkling wine) and we learned about the history of the Ratskeller and the wine that is stored there. The Ratskeller was built beneath the town hall in 1405 and contains wine from the past 4 centuries, the oldest being from 1653. I also went to the Kunsthalle museum, which was very nice, but I liked the tour of the wine cellar more. Barbara and I had a nice meal in the restaurant connected to the Ratskeller afterward. We both ordered the Bremer Pannfisch and I’d have to say that has been my favorite German meal so far.
I took the train to Hamburg today and ventured through the rain from the Hamburg Hauptbahnhof (main train station) to the International Maritime Museum. I didn’t expect the museum to be so large, but I’m glad it was. There were nine floors total, each with a different theme and several side rooms containing historical artifacts from lots of different time periods. I liked the paintings and boat models best.
I also forgot to mention that I took a tour of the Auswandererhaus Bremerhaven last week. At the beginning of the tour I was given a boarding pass containing the information of two people: one who immigrated from Germany to the United States and one who emigrated to Germany. I found the museum really interesting because it was very personalized and interactive. The museum went into a lot of detail about how Bremen, Bremerhaven, and Germany as a whole were affected by immigration and emigration. It was also really interesting to see immigration patterns throughout various centuries.
Frederik met me in Hamburg after I went through the museum and he showed me the Elbphilharmonie and some historical parts of Hamburg before bringing me back to the train station to make sure I got on the correct train.
Ich spreche viel Deutsch, aber ich spreche auch viel Englisch. Also ich werde versuchen, mehr Deutsch in meinem Blog zu schreiben.
Ich freue mich auf weiter reisen, weil ich mehr über Deutschland und deutsche Geschichte kennenlerne. Ich weiß nicht, ob ich nach einem anderen Land oder irgendwo in Deutschland reisen möchte. Aber das ist ein Problem für morgen. Jetzt muss ich schlafen, weil ich morgen früh zur Schule gehe. Tschüss!

Deutsch!
Heute habe ich einen englischen Text zu den fünften Klassen gelesen. Sie sind so aufgeregt, wenn ich bei der Klasse bin. Das hat mir sehr gefreut. Ich kann nicht erinnern, wie ich in der Grundschule war, aber diese Schüler sind im Klassenzimmer fokussiert und engagiert. Ich habe bemerkt, dass sie allen partizipieren möchten und sie sind auch sehr kontrolliert. Wenn die Glocke klingelt, die eine kurze Pause markiert, sind die ganze Klasse laut und energiegeladen. Ich habe das witzig gefunden.
Ich bin beeindruckt mit dem deutschen Schulsystem, weil die Schüler beginnen, wenn sie sehr klein sind, Englisch zu lernen. Deshalb sprechen die meiste Schüler sehr gut Englisch. Also sie müssen auch eine andere Fremdsprache lernen. Und das hat mir sehr gut gefallen, weil die Schüler noch kein Abitur gemacht haben, aber sie haben trotzdem auch gute Sprachkenntnisse und ein gutes Verständnis für die verschiedenen Kulturen der Welt.

Deutschland vs. USA — Food
Während der High School habe ich niemals Frühstück gegessen. Ich wurde mit mir Tee bringen oder später im Tag Kaffee und ein Bagel kaufen. Seitdem ich in Bremen wohne, habe ich jeden Tag Frühstück gegessen. Normalerweise esse ich ein Stück Brot mit viel Quark und einer dünnen Schicht Mango-Pfirsich Marmelade. Das schmeckt sehr gut. Ich bin mit Barbara einkaufen gegangen und sie hat mir ein tolles Geschäft gezeigt. Auf einem anderen Tag bin ich mit Hendrik und seine Freunde in einer lokalen Crêperie gegangen. Ich aß kein Crêpe, sondern ein Sandwich, das von eine große Baguette ausgemacht wurde.
Ich habe Currywurst in die Auswandererhaus Bremerhaven gegessen und das war sehr gut. Aber jetzt ist mein Lieblingsessen von Deutschland das Bremer Pannfisch.
Ich habe auch eine größere Wertschätzung für Milch entwickelt. Ich finde die Milch hier besser als die Milch der USA, weil sie ist vollständige biologische Milch von einem Bauernhof, der in der Nähe von Bremen steht.

Das Wochenende
A shorter post today just to show some highlights of my past weekend adventures.
Fahrradtour — I biked around Oberneuland one afternoon so that I could go bird watching at a nearby public bird-watching space. I enjoyed the bike ride a lot, but I forgot to bring gloves to by the time I came back to the house my hands felt numb.
Wattenmeer — On Sunday, Barbara took me to the Wattenmeer Museum in Cuxhaven. The weather was very nice so we got to walk on the mudflat for a while.

Das Oper
I attended a performance of Don Giovanni at the Theaterbremen on Wednesday evening, which was very interesting due to the modernity of the show. The theater had a large screen above the stage with German subtitles for every line, but I had already read a summary of the opera prior to the show, so it was fairly easy to follow along.
Morgen gehe ich mit dem Bahn nach München. Die Reise dauert sechs Stunden, aber ich werde mit mir ein Buch und meinen Laptop bringen. Ich hoffe, dass ich ins BMW Museum gehen kann. Ich freue mich sehr auf diese Reise, weil ich werde (hoffentlich) ein volles Jahr in München studieren und das würde mir sehr gut geholfen, wenn ich die Stadt sehen kann, bevor das Programm.

München!
Dieses Wochenende bin ich auf einem Bahn nach München gegangen. Ich komme heute in ein paar Stunden zurück nach Bremen. Die Bahnreise von Bremen bis München dauert sechs Stunden und das war sehr lang, aber das Bild von dem Fenster war schön und ich habe ein gutes Buch gelesen.
Zuerst bin ich zum BMW Welt gegangen, weil ich das BMW Museum sehen wollte. Die alten Autos, die ich gesehen habe, haben Hintergründe, die mit wichtigen Aspekten der deutschen Geschichte verbunden sind. Deshalb hat mir dieses Museum sehr gut gefallen.
Am Samstag bin ich durch den Englischer Garten zum Innenstadt gelaufen. Erstmal habe ich die Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität gesehen und ich habe ein bisschen von der Geschichte der Weiße Rose gehört. Danach habe ich einige historische Stätten gesehen, wie das alte Rathaus, das neue Rathaus, die Frauenkirche, und viele andere Kirche. Für Mittagessen habe ich Ofenfrischer Schweinebraten gegessen und Weißbier getrunken, also ein echtes bayerisches Essen. Das Restaurant liegt in dem Viktualienmarkt, in dem ich viele FC Bayern Fußballfans gesehen habe, wo man stundenlang essen, trinken und kaufen kann.
Samstag Nacht bin ich und Alexa ins Theater gegangen, weil wir Tickets für ein Ballett hatten. Das war das Bayerische Staatsballett. Das Ballett war Spartacus und es gefällt mir sehr gut, weil ich die Antike mag. Trotzdem ich nur einen Oper und ein Ballett gesehen habe, mag ich Ballette mehr als Opern, wegen der Synchronisation der Tanzen. Die Musik im Oper ist mir egal, weil die Stimmen der Singer hat die Musik überwältigt. Die Musik im Ballett dagegen ergänzet die Tanzen. Ich fand, dass ich mich leicht auf die Bewegung der Tänzer und Musik konzentrieren könnte.
Morgen beginnt meine letzte Woche in Bremen. Dieser Monat ging schnell vorbei.

Mehr von München
Ich habe vergessen, dass ich in einem tollen Museum gegangen bin, das Alte Pinakothek heißt. Ich habe die neue Pinakothek auch besucht, aber nur für ein paar Minuten, weil ich zum Bahnhof gehen musste. Das Museum hat mir sehr gefallen.
Ich habe bemerkt, dass wenn ich nicht viel über das Grammatik meiner deutschen Sätzen denken, ist es einfacher etwas zu sagen. Wenn ich zu viel denken, dann bekomme ich verwirrt und muss ich ein neues Satz beginnen. Ich weiß, dass mein Deutsch verbessern, weil ich hier in Bremen bin. Es ist einfacher als bevor, Deutschsätze zu schreiben und zu sagen. Ich finde das toll.

Letzter Tag in Bremen
Gestern war mein letzter Tag in der Schule und heute ist mein letzter voller Tag in Bremen. Heute gehe ich in der Innenstadt, weil ich mehr Tee kaufen möchte. Ich habe viele Schokolade von der Englisch Lehrerinnen bekommt.
Dieser Vormittag schaue ich im Fernsehen das Australian Open Halbfinale Match zwischen dem Deutscher Alexander Zverev, der aus Hamburg kommt, und dem Österreicher Dominik Thiem. Der Kommentar ist auf Deutsch, aber ich weiß relativ viel über Tennis also es ist einfach, trotz der Schnelligkeit der Sprache, die Kommentatoren zu verstehen.
